Why this petition matters

Started by Martin Sommer

Is it right for one person to take another's life? - No
Is it right for one person to take another's livelihood? - No
Is it right for one person to take another's house? - No
Then, why is it right for one person to take away another's beautiful living space?

John Arrillaga, a Menlo Park resident and real estate developer, is proposing the build a 10 story, 4 tower, high-rise office complex at 27 University Avenue in Palo Alto, between Alma and El Camino. He has been masquerading the effort as gift, theater complex, etc., but at heart, its another densely compacted office complex. If he really believed in theater, he would rebuild the Varsity Theater in downtown Palo Alto, a perfect location and a notable cause.

We all love our homes in Palo Alto for our own reasons. For me, I love my view of the Santa Cruz Mountains, full sunlight, and total privacy. If John were to build his office complex, it would destroy my living space, and the space of 43 other homeowners in Abitare, a condo complex neatly tucked between Alma and High Streets, and University and Lytton Avenues.

Please join me in sending a firm message to the Palo Alto City Council and Mayor, to stop this madness, and to retain the Palo Alto 50-foot height limit. I consider a firm message to be voting "no" for their reelection, if they allow high-rise buildings at 27 University Ave.

Here are their election dates:

Patrick Burt, up for reelection, this November, 2012
Greg Schmid, up for reelection, this November, 2012
Karen Holman, up for reelection, this November, 2014
Gail Price, up for reelection, this November, 2014
Gregory Scharff, up for reelection, this November, 2014
Nancy Shepherd,  up for reelection, this November, 2014

Yiaway Yeh,  out November, 2012, not running
Sid Espinosa, out November, 2012, not running
Larry Klein, excused, wife is a Stanford faculty member

Please sign my petition, and state why its important to you.
